City Council hears Phase II report on Las Cruces Center Susan Sieger, Director of Convention, Sports and Entertainment Practice for KPMG, hired by the city to determine the feasibility of building and operating a convention center in Las Cruces, presented a financial analysis study of potential funding sources and financing instruments that may be available to pay for construction and operation of the proposed center at a work session on September 25. In her presentation she mentioned various ways of funding the facility including re-enacting the $2.50 surcharge on the hotel and motel rooms in Las Cruces. KPMG also told council that construction costs for the center are estimated to be between $22.2 and $26 million and it is projected that the facility could produce annual tax revenues of $1.2 million to $1.6 million a year for the city. The preferred location for the proposed center is on land owned by New Mexico State University (NMSU) at the corner of University Avenue and Union Avenue. The NMSU Board of Regents recently gave its approval for NMSU administration to continue talks with city officials about developing the site, which could include a hotel. Tourism Department attends Latin American travel show and Expo New Mexico 2006 In an effort to increase Las Cruces’ visibility internationally, the Tourism Department attended the 2006 La Cumbre “Summit of the Americas” Latin American Travel Expo in Las Vegas this past September 5-8. The show was a gathering of hundreds of buyers, agents, and U.S. receptive operators interested in bringing Latin American visitors to the United States. This was the first time Las Cruces attended the show and the department shared a booth with the New Mexico Tourism Department.
The Tourism Department also represented Las Cruces at this year’s Expo New Mexico 2006 at the New Mexico State Fair Hospitality Day, September 19. The show was an opportunity to visit with consumers and encourage attendees to venture to southern New Mexico and see Las Cruces.
