Passenger” is more than the re-release of a great film – it’s a
rare chance to see a major cinematic work on the big screen.
In this film, Jack Nicholson plays David Locke, who is in Africa to report
on the rebel group. He is at a crossroads, because he believes that
he can no longer be objective. He feels that his personality
filters into every piece of reporting, and furthermore, that he can no
longer explore anything new because his life is filled out with his fully
formed personality. When Robertson dies of a heart attack, David
assumes his identity – even to the point of keeping the man’s planned meetings
in Munich and Barcelona. For all the still-pertinent probing of
politics, terrorism and ethical journalism, Antonioni’s film is mainly
about a single human being. David Locke is Nicholson as would be
imagined by Camus, a man as addicted to his imagined rootlessness as he
is nonplussed. NOTE: Mesilla Valley Film Society members will
be admitted free to this classic film. Rated PG-13 for some violence,
nudity and language. Ticket prices: Regular $6, students/seniors $5, members,

and Luc Dardenne’s brutally naturalistic approach certify them as
heirs apparent to Robert Bresson and Roberto Rossellini. The
Dardennes have a gift of finding a sort of beauty in ugliness.
The images in their new work will haunt you long after they fade to darkness.
The story focuses on Bruno, an arrogant, small-time hood barely out of
his teens. When his 18-year-old girlfriend, Sonia, goes to the
hospital to have their baby, he fails to accompany her or pay a visit.
Then, the fence for the stuff Bruno steals casually asks if they intend
to keep Jimmy because, if not, he could fetch quite a bit on the black market.
Bruno’s act is so unfathomable that it brings a sudden air of unreality
to “L’Enfant.” The film seems to spin out of control when Sonia
and Bruno, who are like children themselves, are forced to deal with
the consequences of his action. This film is rated R for brief language
and is in French with English subtitles. Ticket prices: Regular $6,
students/seniors $5, members, children & Wednesday’s $4. 505-524-8287.

what it must have been like to be a young, smart, idealistic dissenter
in Nazi Germany, where no dissent was tolerated. This gripping
true story challenges you to gauge your own courage and strength of
character should you find yourself in similar circumstances. The
movie follows the last six days of Sophie’s life, after her and her
brother Hans are arrested for printing and distributing anti-Nazi leaflets.
Their arrest takes place in a political climate of panic and denial
after Germany’s defeat at Stalingrad. News of the rout has begun
to circulate, but the powers-that-be dig in their heels. The shrill
accusations leveled against Sophie and two of the others accused in
the interrogation room and in court by the fulminating judge have a
tone of desperate, hysterical fury. “Sophie Scholl: The
Final Days” pointedly steers away from unnecessary melodrama and sentimentality
to deliver a crisp chronology of events told entirely from Sophie’s perspective.

8 pm Fridays and Saturdays, 2 pm Sundays. More so than any
composer and lyricist who have written for the stage, the songs
of Rodgers & Hammerstein have become an integral part of our
everyday lives. We sing them in the shower, we dance to them
in ballrooms, we hear them on the radio and in clubs and, yes, in
elevators and supermarkets too. We still thrill to them on
the live stage in their respective shows, and we teach them to our
children. This stunning collection of compositions places five
performers in a theatrical setting - first “backstage,” where the songs
are sung as personal interplay, and then “onstage.” While offering
the performers an opportunity to explore the songs within their own styles

hits. Regular admission for musicals: $9, students and seniors
