You can take the girl out of the woods, but you can't take
the Trees away from the girl. "The outer bark that protects
the trees, the hidden strength under ground that supports the trees,
the life-giving leaves, the starkness of dead branches, the inevitable
backdrop of 'the rest of the world', on which all trees appear are
just components. The fun is bringing it all together to capture
a mood, a thought, an emotion. That's the Fun!!!" Monday

noon - 5 pm. A critical step for muralists
is the drawing of charcoal studies. Their purpose
is to prepare a scaled rendering that allows the artist
to work out perspectives, proportions and the size of
the actual mural. Hurd (1904 - 1984), a native
of Roswell, created the mural in 1952. In a letter
prior to creating the artwork, Hurd described his concept
for the piece this way: "(The Mural) would represent many
human activities upon our great southwestern background - activities
such as types of farming, stockraising, habitation
- and finally in overall picture it would stress...various
aspects of the use, control and conservation of water and
land." Hurd's distinctive style and the use of southwestern
subject matter brought him great prominence and fame, which
continues today, two decades after his passing. Architects,
magazine editors, art connoisseurs, a president and
a Saudi king sought out Hurd during his career for commissioned
works. Museum admission: $5 adults, $3 senior citizens (60
