1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation declaring
the slaves "Forever free," but it was not until June 19, 1865 when Union
Army Major General Gordon Granger docked at Galveston, Texas, that the
news reached the Southwest.&nbsp; Celebrated for a day, a week and in some
cities the entire month, Juneteenth seeks to ensure a monumental period
in American history is not forgotten by commemorating the end of slavery
with speeches, poetry readings, interpretive dance, film festivals, theatrical
performances, barbecues, picnics, parades and family gatherings.&nbsp;

Juan Fiesta in TORTUGAS</font></font></b>

south of Las Cruces. The Fest will embrace the theme “Dances with Turtles.”&nbsp;
Tortugas Pueblo will dance traditional Native American dances in front
of the church in the afternoon to continue the long-standing tradition
of dancing on the day of St. John the Baptist.&nbsp;&nbsp; Get out your
“chanclas (dancing shoes)” and get ready to go “Dancing with Turtles”.&nbsp;

held under the shade of the Parish Hall Pavilion and are all free.&nbsp;
In addition to the enchilada dinner, there will be lots of food booths

am and racing begins at 10 am.&nbsp; The three-mile rafting adventure will
begin at La Llorona Park beneath the Picacho Street bridge, and end just
upstream from the Calle de Norte Bridge ("Mesilla Bridge"). Creativity
and the use of discarded materials in building rafts are highly encouraged.
Prizes will be awarded to participants in the race - best use of recycled
materials, first to finish, most people on one (floating) boat, least likely
to finish, most creative and best mascot(s).&nbsp; Open to individuals
and teams of all ages. Come on out and have fun on YOUR river. Don't forget
your hats, sunscreen and lawn chairs. Free and open to the public to watch.
