Jones, boards a train with a large leather-bound trunk, from which a large
pool of blood slowly issues. Arrested, Rosie’s sentenced to life in a prison
for the criminally insane, for murdering and chopping up two people. Cut
to today and the genteel village of Little Wallop (pop. 57), where the
Goodfellow family resides. Dad Walter is the local vicar, somewhat forgetful
and endlessly harried by an aged nosy neighbor, Mrs. Parker. Mom Gloria
is bored out of her brain. Enter the aged Grace Hawkins, the family’s new
housekeeper, who has a leather-bound trunk just like Rosie’s. Almost immediately,
the Goodfellows’ life changes for the better. Goes for warm character development

and poignant—a melancholy lament for a world gone awry, delivered in a
tone so light you might think you had missed it. Follows the amorous exploits
of a group of aristocrats invited to a hunting party at a French château.
Their hectic intrigues find an amusing and uncanny echo in the affairs
of their servants, upstairs and downstairs comically crossing paths on
the way to a tragic conclusion. The film was cut twice, and its original
negative was destroyed by Allied bombing. The occasion for this re-release
is its complete restoration from a master print. It is required viewing,
if only to understand the ideal that filmmakers from the late Robert Altman
to Woody Allen have been after. French with English subtitles. France ~

Amin, exuberantly portrayed by Forest Whitaker, has a fateful encounter
with a Scottish physician. Amin - whose affinity for the Scots, whom he
sees as victims of British oppression much as he is - leads him to grandiosely
refer to himself as the last king of Scotland. Spellbinding, filled with
unexpected moments of levity that almost make you feel guilty laughing
at the antics of a tyrant. This is Whitaker’s unforgettable performance.

saga of group of American sailors aboard a Navy cargo vessel in the Pacific
shows the crew suffering from that deadly boredom that is part of the routine
of war. To the ship's company, the Skipper is a cantankerous, small-minded
man and every one of them conspires against him as the ship pursued its
runs from a Apathy to Tedium and back again. They are on a cargo
mission, so little else is going to happen. That Mr. Roberts, (a
lieutenant) shared the crew's dislike for the Captain was one reason for
his popularity. Roberts joined the world to fight; he hates being
inactive almost as much as he hates the Captain. Privy to the crew's
hijinks against the Skipper, Roberts still feels it's his duty to retain
